The Women (LINK)
September 1st 2008 14:46
Hollywood has made another attempt at remaking a classic. The Women is a redo of the 1939 film opening on September 12th. Though I have yet to see the new movie I have seen the older version and I can say this will be difficult to pull off. But the new cast certainly has the talent onboard to do it. Meg Ryan, Annette Benning, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, and Debra Messing are main cast of a film entirely of women but they talk about men and their lives revolve around men to the point that by the end of the film you forget there was not a single male presence in sight.
The original is worth a revisit just to see the old glamour of the film. It was shot in black and white with one stunning color scene of a fashion show in which all of the main characters attend then afterwards the wife and husband stealer meet head-on for the first time. This is the stuff Hollywood was built upon. I hope the remake can live up to it.
The Old Hollywood version was heavy on fashion and famale cattiness. Makes me wonder what the New Hollywood will offer up. Oh, I do hope more of the same!
