Mandela's great loss on eve of World Cup
June 11th 2010 15:28
This is some really sad news just before the beginning of the soccer World Cup in South Africa. I was watching the ceremony and noticed that Nelson Mandela was absent. I was so sure that I heard it from the news that he was going to walk around the stadium saluting everyone but to my horror, my friend told me that his great-granddaughter was killed in a car accident. It is such a tragedy especially when the great celebration was going to commence the next day. He stayed home with his family during this very difficult time.
Here are some sources:
South African President, Jacob Zuma: "The nation shares your loss and mourns with you, especially on the day on which our dreams and hopes come alive in the opening of the first FIFA World Cup on African soil."
His foundation: "We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr. Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy." Mandela "will be there with you in spirit today."
This is such a tragedy and she was only 13 years old.
