Chanel & Hermès
June 6th 2010 01:37
Hey everyone!
This is a post about premier designer goodies such as Chanel and Hermès. I also appreciate fashion and its quirkiness. The designers of both brands are absolutely amazing and they should receive greater attention to their work of art. I am not writing this to praise them but to discuss the materialistic value in the bags and accessories. Just to make it clear, I have nothing against the brands. It is just something outside of their reach that irks me. I absolutely adore the products and am fortunate to own one piece of Chanel.
The point of this post is to highlight the fast growing trend of Chanel and Hermès. You see celebrities or socialites carry the classic 2.55 or a Birkin or Kelly and the general society is quickly catching up to this trend to. Since everyone, if they save up can afford this bag, has the beauty of it lost it meaning? I always wonder whether people buy it for the brand or do they actually appreciate the design? When you go on websites such as Purse Forum, you see tons of people displaying their recent purchases and some of them are tremendous! They spent a ludicrous amount of money on bags and accessories but live in crappy houses. Or you strike upon wealthy people showing off their collection. It is either one of those. Again, it makes me wonder what people are thinking when they buy these bags. They cost a fortune yet they do not really care. Is it all about the image or what? Do they think that by buying all these expensive bags, it would improve their social status (if the society even has one)?
Since I have a Chanel purse too, I might as well let you in on my intentions. I will admit, I started wanting one when I saw how it was the new IT bag that is classic and seen on everyone in the media. But I never got the classic one because I felt it was so generic. I got a bucket bag (well technically, Seth gave that to me for our anniversary). It is not blatantly Chanel but if you know the brand well, you would recognise it. I am so happy with it because I have not seen anyone carrying this and just means a lot to me. Hermès is the new Chanel but what will happen after that when the craze slowly disappears? What other brands can we exploit before the meaning of it is lost? Just look at Louis Vuitton. No one considers that a WOW brand anymore.

Just about always, they'll be buying it for the brand. If someone lacks good taste, then they turn to a brand such as Chanel that was created by someone with impeccable taste and believe that this is all that is required to be stylish. If the bag wasn't obviously designer, then the buyer would certainly not be spending thousands of dollars on it.
Good for you, not going for the "It" bag! I think it's so silly when women all carry the same bag; all it does it scream to the world that they have no sense of individuality. A woman with inherently good taste, and the right attitude, can buy her entire outfit from an op shop and look incredible. Great post.
