Backpacking Through Germany: The Beer Hall Tour

September 29th 2007 02:25
The idea of backpacking through any place in Europe appeals to all of us. There are a lot of things to see and a lot of places to go. If you know someone in the area then you’re fortunate enough to be able to pick up a few places that may or not be heavily known, but are certainly one of the must stop places along the way. This article, we’ll be focusing on Germany and the pubs. One things for sure, Germany is definitely known for its quality beer and we’ve compiled a list of must hit beer halls and pubs while back packing.

Augsburg
Murphy's Law
Irish pub, cocktail bar (huge list of cocktails, large choice of whiskeys and other spirits), serves traditional English/Irish food as well as pizza

Skipper’s

Cologne
Allstadt Päffgen - Kölsch is the beer of Cologne and you should try their “one metre beer” – a stick measuring one metre serves around 12 small 20 centiliter glasses of beer. Try a Sion or Küppers Kölsch. To order in German simply say “ein Meter Kölsch bitte.”

Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen
Ernst Barre & Moritz Fliege
Both venues are located around 20 kilometres apart.

Frankfurt
Bad Homburg If you’re looking for a more upscale pub, this is the one for you. Considered to be in one of the “poshest” suburbs in Frankfort it also houses the pub’s restaurant, Kronenhof Hell (www.badhomburger-brauhaus.de) For a non-alcoholic beer, try the Clausthaler Hefeweizen available here and throughout Germany.

Hamburg
When visiting Hamburg check out any of their pubs or restaurants and try the Flensburger Dunkel or Dithmarscher Pilsener. They are widely available in both establishments.

Hanover

Leipzig
Auerbachs Keller, Leipzig (tel. 0341/216100): The stage of the debate between Faust and Mephistopheles has made this one of the most famous pubs in east Germany. The walls portray several murals of the legend of Faust. The building itself can be dated back to the 1530’s.

Come on, that's it? You have 5 places in Augsburg but only mention the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, none in Frankfurt directly and for Hamburg you only have a kind of "general" recommendation. Are you serious? This is one of the worst list about germany Ie ever seen.

Sorry Angie, I'm sure you can do better.

A gutted guy from Munich.
